Surrounding Area

Your vacation home is located in one of the largest nature preserves in Germany. This is all in close proximity to the German capital of Berlin as well as to Potsdam, the capital city of the State of Brandenburg. Both cities feature areas which are designated UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites. In Potsdam those sites include Sanssouci Palace with its extensive parks, the New Garden and Babelsberg castles, Castle and Park Sacrow with the Church of the Redeemer, the Russian Colony Alexandrovka, the Belvidere on the Pfingstberg, and the Kaiserbahnhof (Imperial Train Station) am Wildpark as well. The heart of the German republic beats in Berlin with its storied and varied history. Both Potsdam and Berlin can be reached quickly - it takes 45 to 60 minutes by rail from the neighboring Borkheide station.
The region's biggest asset and thereby that of “House Katharina” are the vast forests which offer fresh air, solitude, and plentiful mushrooms in season. The pine forests in particular - the trademark of the Federal State of Brandenburg - extend over many square kilometers. Nearby you can enjoy swimming in Brandenburg's lakes. At a distance of 3 kilometers there is an outdoor pool, and a thermal spa is only 25 kilometers away . To the south lies the relatively unknown and completely underrated Fläming ridge. But not only Berlin and Potsdam entice guests with their unique sights in the area. The Wörlitz-Dessau Gardens, the Lutherstadt Wittenberg, venerable Brandenburg/Havel, and the Cistercian monastery in Lehnin can be visited on day trips. When you stay with us you can gather mushrooms, observe nature, go ballooning nearby, complete small aircraft training in Schönhagen, or visit the Klaistow Asparagus Farm with its restaurant, country store, petting zoo, wild animal enclosures, and climbing course. In April/May the Baumblütenfest (Fruit Wine Festival), the second largest folk festival in Germany awaits you. And you can quickly reach “House Katharina” in Borkwalde via Autobahn A2, A9, and A 10, via train from the neighboring community of Borkheide or via the airports Berlin-Schönefeld or Berlin-Tegel. In Borkwalde you can enjoy one bistro and two restaurants featuring home cooking. You will also find a physician, a pharmacy, a physical therapy practice, one hair salon, and a gardening business.
